2 Things An Exterminator Can Do About Raccoons

Raccoons are highly successful in urban and suburban settings. They can find plenty of places to hide and nest, and they take advantage of the garbage that humans produce and can find plenty to eat. These things mean that you can end up with raccoons living in your attic, crawlspace, or even chimney. Those are safe places for the animals, especially for mothers looking to raise their families. However, raccoons can be very destructive. They chew through your walls, and their urine can actually cause your walls and ceiling to deteriorate. If you think that you have raccoons living at your house, then you need to call an exterminator to get rid of them.

Identify Entrances

Raccoons don't actually need to have a large opening to get into a space. Basically, if they can get their head through the hole, they can get the rest of themselves in the hole. The exterminator will look around and find all the places where the raccoons are getting into your house. They may not immediately block the hole up, because it's important to be sure that there aren't any raccoons in the space before they close it off. You don't want to leave any animals trapped in your house. Once they are all out, the exterminator will block up the hole, using metal so that the raccoons can't chew back through the material and get back in. 

Live Trap

Another thing that the exterminator is going to do is trap the raccoons. They will likely use live traps. A live trap is a humane trap, generally made of metal wires, but they may also have solid sides. The exterminator will put some bait food in the back of the trap. When the raccoon climbs into the trap to get at the food, it will step on a trip panel. That panel will cause the lid of the trap to shut, trapping the animal inside. The exterminator will come so that they can get the trap and then take it far from your house to release them so that the animals don't crawl just back into your house. If your exterminator places live traps, you will need to make sure that you find a full trap as soon as possible. You don't want to leave the animal to suffer in the trap, so calling the exterminator to come to get the full trap is important.
