Got Fleas In Your Apartment? Get Rid Of Them With Items Already In Your Home
Getting rid of fleas by yourself is never an easy task, but when you live in an apartment with shared walls and vents, it can be even harder. However, if you notice fleas and are able to catch the problem right away, you may be able to rid them from your apartment yourself. Here are a couple of ways you can attempt to get rid of these annoying pests with items you already have in your home.
Soap and Water Traps
Soap and water traps are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to kill fleas. By adding soap to a small amount of water, you weigh the fleas down, which causes them to drown. Follow these steps to make soap and water flea traps for your home:
- Find a shallow, almost flat container. Something like a cookie sheet or plate that does not have high edges. High edges can prevent a flea from being able to enter the container.
- Fill the shallow container up with water and then add a couple of squirts of your preferred liquid dish soap. Stir the mixture to spread the soap out.
- Place the water and soap-filled container under your couch, bed, or any other dark areas where fleas are present. As the fleas hop around, they will land in the water and die.
- Replace your trays on a daily basis. You should notice the number of fleas decrease as time goes on, as you are slowly killing off the flea population in your home.
In order for this method to be effective, you must also vacuum your floors and upholstery at least once a day to vacuum away flea eggs. After vacuuming, dispose of the contents in your vacuum or vacuum bag immediately.
Salt
The other way you can get rid of fleas in your home is to sprinkle salt in your carpet. Salt dehydrates fleas and their eggs when they come into contact with it, helping to kill both. This method is very easy. Simply sprinkle a small amount of table salt in your carpets and allow it to sit for 12 to 24 hours. After that time, vacuum your floors to remove the dead fleas and eggs. Repeat the process until the infestation is gone.
It is important to note that you will have to treat your pet for fleas at the same time you treat your home for fleas, or you will never be able to remove them completely. Unfortunately, fleas can quickly infest a space. If you have tried to kill the fleas using the above methods and have been unsuccessful, it may be time to contact your apartment management team and ask for commercial pest control. A commercial pest control company can work to remove fleas from all of the apartments in your building, getting rid of the infestation. Click for more info.
